Management stratagies
Not all methods are practical to homeowners. Scaring deer with strobe lights, noise makers, tethered dogs most times provide only limited or temporary relief. More effective methods include selecting plants that are unattactive to deer, treating plants with a repellent, applying netting or the use of deer fencing.

Placement and selection of plants
The placement of plants helps to determine the extent of deer damage. Plant more susceptible plants near your home. This type of plant would include geraniums, penstemon, phlox, low sunflowers, and nodding onion. Loss chosen plants by deer include coneflowers, salvia, pasque and lupine. Rarely browsed plants include black eye susan, daffodils, grape hyacinth, and gaillardia. no plant is deer proof, a hungry deer will eat just about anything.

Repellents
The two types of deer repellent are contact and area repellents. Contact repellents are applied directly to plants, causing them to taste bad. Area repellents are placed in a problem area and repel by smelling bad. repellents should be applied on a dry day with temperatures above freezing. Treat young trees completely. Older trees are generally treated to height of 6 feet above maximum expected snow depth in the winter. Deer usually browse from the top down. Make sure to treat at the bud or new growth level of the plants you want to protect. Home remedy repellents are questionable at best. Some people have tried hanging human hair or soap bars from branches of trees. Deer have been seen eating the bars of soap.

Fencing
Fencing is the only sure way way to control deer. Conventional deer-proofing fence is 8 feet high and made of woven wire. Some are made to be used as electric fence. Several different type of electric fence are used: vertical five, seven, or nine wire, slanted seven wire, single strand and others. Electric fences provide a safe correction that trains the deer to stay away.
