Permethrin is an insecticide used on crops like corn, wheat, cotton and
many others to kill pests. It is also highly used for variety of applications
like treating of mosquito nets, camper’s bed sheets, control of
the Asian ambrosia beetle (AAB), and wood boring insects such as bark
beetles, clearwing borers, flatheaded borers, pyralid moth borers, and
roundheaded borers.
Permethrin has been known to have issues with building resistance within insects. These issuses
stem from overuse or repeat use of permethrin over an extended time frame. A few ways to break this
problem are to switch or rotate to different insecticide products or use PBO (Piperonyl Butoxide).
PBO breaks through the insect's defense and its synergistic activity makes the insecticide
more powerful and effective. PBO effectively reduces
the cost per gallon of spray solution by allowing the applicator to use less active ingredient
to obtain the mortality rate desired.
Permethrin, like all synthetic pyrethroids, is a neurotoxin.Permethrin
is safe, colorless, and odorless.
Permethrin is used to kill pest in-sects in agriculture, home pest control,
forestry, and in public health programs, including head lice control.
The majority of use of permethrin used in U.S., is in field of Agriculture
and a whooping 70% of it on corn and wheat crops to safeguard them from
insects and pests.
Permethrin which is a contact insecticide and not a repellent kills insects
by exciting their nervous system, making it very sensitive to stimuli
from sense organs.
Permethrin is also used in Commercial Nurseries to control wood boring
insects and Asian ambrosia beetle. When used at the higher rates for borer
control in the landscape, permethrin is a good replacement for Dursban,
an insecticide which no longer has landscape uses on the label.
